1. You are responsible for EVERYTHING in your business.  That's right! You are now the office manager, the sales and marketing manager, and the finance director!  Before you chose the self-employed route you had a team of staff to take care of all of these tasks for you. Before I started in the Easy Office Organization program I was struggling with filing and labeling. I have a terrible habit of removing files out of it's filing drawer and not replacing them back in place immediately after I no longer have use for them. I consider myself the "stacking tray" queen... I've become better, I have been able to eliminate most of the stacking trays that I have been using in the past and I'm trying to condense it to only 2 trays. I'm not quite there yet, but I'm working at it.

By following the lessons in the program I have purchased 2 additional legal filling drawers, have created more space for my suppliers catalogs and have created folders for much of the paperwork that had accumulated in my filing trays. The 2 new filing drawers is a nice addition to my workspace. I've downsized the amount of filing trays that have sat around the office for several years and working towards having only 2 filing trays in my office.

Persistance and consistency works hand in hand. When you team the 2 together, persistence and consistency is a winning combination, there's no where else to go but up and to be filled with complete satisfaction. Although I am guilty for not following through with all of the assignments on a timely basis, what assignments I have read so far and have applied is definitely a nice addition to the office and its operations. It's a nice feeling to know that I am taking control of the office and not the office taking control of me!

Why should you learn from me?

Well, simply put, everything I teach I've DONE! I'm not simply passing off information I've learned elsewhere.  These systems have been created as a direct result of running my own business, and working one-on-one with many clients over the past seven years.

I've tweaked them, and fine-tuned them, and now they're ready for me to share with you.

Let me tell you a little bit about how I got here...

 

I remember very clearly the turning point that led me on the path to becoming a VA (Virtual Assistant).  It was around September/October 2001 and my oldest son had just gone back to his second year of school following the long summer break.  I felt very unsettled and knew that from that point on arranging for care for him (and eventually my second son) during school holidays was going to be problematic.

 

At this same time I only had about six months left in the position I was in as Office Manager for a multi-million dollar Government funded project, so I knew that things were about to change.  I needed to look for another position within the local authority I worked for, which I wasn't too worried about, but it still didn't solve the problem of the school holidays.  I just felt there had to be something better...

 

I picked up a copy of Office Secretary magazine that was lying around the office, and there was an article about Virtual Assistants in it! I was completely absorbed by this article and my first thought was I can do that!  And you know what?  That's exactly what I did!!

 

In November 2001 I started my practice, and by January 2002 I'd handed in my notice to my local Government employer and went straight into working for myself!

 

I had found my 'something better'...

 

  • I am able to put my children first

  • I have complete flexibility in my schedule

  • I have balance in my life

  • And I still have the challenge and satisfaction of bringing an income into the household!

And best of all, today I run a full and thriving online business management business - I even have a waiting list of clients wanting to work with me!

So, what does having systems in place mean for me?

For one thing, every year for the past three years, I have more than doubled my income! And I'm not having to work more hours to achieve that! In fact I've been working the same amount of hours for the past three years (about 20-25 hours per week).

But most importantly...

Having systems in place means that I can run a successful solo service business which allows me:

  • Freedom!  I have complete control over my own schedule.

  • To be around for my children, and not worry about calling in to the boss to ask for the day off when one of them is sick.

  • To be able to take time off when I want, especially during the summer holidays which can be between two and three months long. 

  • To get up in the morning and decide that today we're going to go to the zoo, or go on a bike ride to the park.

  • And it also means that I can invest in myself and my business by learning from the best mentors out there!
